Man dies after falling several stories in construction accident

The construction of a high rise building requires diligence and expertise in erecting the support equipment that is expected to allow workers to conduct their tasks safely. Unfortunately, not every accident will be prevented, and workers often face the danger of suffering a serious injury or death in a construction accident. Many South Carolina residents have been negatively impacted by these types of tragic incidents.

Recently, in a neighboring state, a 24-year-old man was working on the site of a high rise building. As he was using the construction elevator to ascend to the floor that he needed, there was apparently an unidentified problem with the mechanism. According to the report, the man attempted to exit the structure and get to a safe location on the floor, but for reasons that are yet unclear, he was unable to do so.

The worker fell an estimated 21-stories before landing on a platform. He did not survive the fall. According to an unconfirmed report, that particular hoist elevator had experienced some mechanical issues earlier in the week before this fatal incident. Both the North Carolina Department of Labor and the federal office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration will be conducting separate investigations into the cause of this tragic incident.

Both investigations are expected to take several months to complete. Anytime a serious or fatal construction accident occurs, the victim's family often suffers the burdens imposed by financial losses related to the accident. South Carolina workers -- or their surviving families in the event an accident was fatal -- may file for benefits through the state-regulated workers' compensation insurance program. An attorney who files these claims on a routine basis can provide assistance in securing the maximum benefits for which one may qualify.
