Family wins medical malpractice suit over woman's disability

When one comes down with a serious illness, medical providers are trusted to find a remedy that brings relief and healing. Unfortunately, that trust can be misplaced when a doctor fails to properly diagnosis or treat a patient, which can result in serious and permanent complications. South Carolina residents who have been victims of negligent care may have a basis for filing a medical malpractice lawsuit.

Recently, a jury decided in favor of a family whose loved one suffered permanent and debilitating complications from an incorrect diagnosis and treatment protocol. According to the lawsuit, in 2013, a woman sought care from her local hospital after complaining of not feeling well. After the medical staff ran a series of tests, they announced that she was suffering from a brain tumor.

The woman was prescribed a course of steroids that her providers claimed would shrink the growth. Sadly, the woman was actually suffering from an infection in her brain and the use of steroids without antibiotics allowed the infection to spread unchecked. She is now almost completely incapacitated and only has the use of one of her limbs. She is currently in a long-term care facility where it is expected she will remain for the rest of her life.

The jury awarded the woman's family more than $7 million in damages for care that her attorney referred to as grossly negligent. It was stated that if she had received an accurate diagnosis, she would have left the hospital in good health. Now, five years later, the compensation she was awarded will go toward ensuring she receives the specialized care she now requires. South Carolina residents who have likewise suffered serious consequences due to negligent care are assured of the right to pursue just compensation for their damages through a medical malpractice lawsuit of their own.
