Veterinarian technicians at higher risk for suffering work injury

Every occupation comes with the possibility of an injury. There are some professions, however, where the risk of suffering a work injury is higher, simply due to the often unpredictable nature of the job. South Carolina workers who have been injured on the job may have recourse to monetary assistance from the state's workers' compensation program.

Studies have shown that those who work in the animal care industry suffer a higher rate of injuries than first responders. Vet techs are the ones who have the most hands-on time with the animal patients and are therefore the most likely to suffer a work-related injury. The majority of the injuries suffered are due to encounters with animals suffering sprains, with falls and exposure to hazardous substances rounding out the top three causes.

Other sources of injuries stem from handling or moving equipment or from the dangers posed by zoonotic infections. Several techs and veterinarians shared their experiences of being injured on the job, with the majority of serious injuries affecting their hands and arms. Inexperience and youth are often contributing factors when it comes to injuries inflicted by animals, though the policies of some animal hospitals add to the chances of an accident occurring.

Some workers have complained of a culture that does not support the well-being of employees. Furthermore, there may be no set policy that allows an injured or ill employee the opportunity to fully recover before being required to return to work. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding an incident, employees who have suffered a serious work injury are usually entitled to file a claim for benefits from the workers' compensation insurance program. South Carolina workers often rely upon the assistance of an attorney who is well-versed in the claims process in order to pursue recovery of all available benefits.
